Western Bluebird (OR)

Document Actions
Species: Western Bluebird (Sialia mexicana)
Location: Newburg, OR
Status: Five eggs incubating!

June 28 - It is now over 24 hours later and there are still five eggs.   The female has now begun to incubate! In approximately 13-14 days, the eggs will begin hatching.

June 27 -  The fifth, and likely final, egg was laid shortly after 9am this morning. Given that second nest attempts are typically smaller than first attempts, the female has probably laid the last egg and should  begin incubating today.

June 26 - The female peeks in on the four eggs in her clutch. We know from our cam host that this banded female is two years old.

June 25 - The third egg is laid nearly 24 hours after the second egg. Typical clutch sizes for Western Bluebirds are four to six eggs.

June 24 - Voila! The second egg is laid shortly after 7 am.

June 24 - The female Western Bluebird is in the process of laying an egg in this picture. Images before and after confirm this.

June 23 - The start of a second nesting attempt has begun, just a week after the last brood fledged!
