Eastern Bluebird (Heath5, KY)

Document Actions
Species: Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis)
Location: Paducah, KY
Status: Four eggs, three hatchlings before camera turned off.

We have turned off the camera system as we were experiencing frequent technical problems. Many thanks to Heath Elementary for all their hard work and devotion to the cams this year! We look forward to working with them again next year!

August 19 - At one week old, the young birds eyes are open, and they are capable of regulating their own body temperatures.

August 18 - On day six, we can just begin to see their eyes opening.

August 17 - At five days old, the nestlings still have their eyes closed and have very limited movement.

August 16 - The male bluebird delivers a large, juicy grasshopper to his nestlings.

August 15 - The female enters to remove a fecal sac, unbeknownst to the four-day old blind nestlings, awaiting a meal.

August 14 - Typically, songbirds will begin molting shortly after breeding,  however, this male has already begun molting even though breeding is still in progress.

August 13 - The cam hosts have confirmed that only three nestlings are in the nest. We are uncertain if the fourth nestling was removed by one of the parents.

August 12 - A rather disheveled looking male enters the box with a small food item. The fourth egg hatched sometime during the night.

August 11 - Cam hosts at Heath Elementary quickly turned the cameras over to yet another nest attempt in progress. The first egg was laid on July 25th and after 14 days of incubation, three of the four eggs had hatched.
