Carolina Wren (SC)
Species: Carolina Wren
(Thryothorus ludovicianus)
Location: Kiawah Island, SC
Status: Four species look at the nestbox, a Carolina Wren seems to claim it.
|
May 3 - It appears as though the Carolina
Wren has returned. We believe the wren formed the depression in the nest
cup—indicative of pre-laying behavior. |
|
April 23 - We were surprised to see a
fourth cavity-nesting species, an Eastern Tufted Titmouse, inspecting the box. |
|
April 8 - The nests of Carolina Wrens often
have a domed top, making it difficult to see inside the nest from this angle. The camera
has captured very little action in the past few days. |
|
April 5 - There is little sexual dimorphism
in Carolina Wrens, i.e., males and females look alike. |
|
April 4 - Given the position of the wren,
it looks like nesting material is being added by either the male or female. |
|
April 2 - The Carolina Wren appears to have
claimed the nest box, at least temporarily. |
|
March 30 - The Carolina Wren has been seen
in and out of the box all day, but it is not clear which species—Carolina Chickadee
or Carolina Wren—has brought in the nest material and formed the nest cup. |
|
March 29 - A male bluebird also makes a
visit to the nest box. While we are not certain who has claimed the nest, it is unlikely
that bluebirds added this nest material. |
|
March 28 - Just a few days later, the floor
of the nest box is lined with mossy-like nest material and a Carolina Wren is seen perched
on the entrance hole. |
|
March 26 - On this day a chickadee made
repeat visits to the box but did not add any nesting material. |
|
March 23 - The chickadees continue to
visit the box, but still no sign that a pair exists or that this box will be claimed. |
|
March 21 - Who will get the box? Some birds
inspect several boxes before nest building. Other birds will often return to boxes where
they have had previous successful nesting attempts. |
|
March 18 - Although the image is somewhat
grainy, judging by the tail length and white eye stripe, the bird appears to be a Carolina
Wren. |
|
March 14 - A chickadee has been seen
almost daily in the box. It could be a male trying to attract a female to the box. |
|
March 13 - It is uncertain whether this
chickadee is male or female or whether it has a mate. |
|
March 11 - A Carolina Chickadee checks out
the view outside the nest box. |
|
March 7 - The cameras capture what appears
to be a male Eastern Bluebirds perched inside the box. |
|
February 28 - Our only snapshot to date of
a Carolina Chickadee checking out the nest box. |
