I just viewed your August 31 photo of the Barn Owls copulating. My question is -- If the Barn Owl who has been roosting there is one of the adolescants who fledged recently, and if he/she has come back now with another Barn Owl -- does copulation begin at such an early age? Or perhaps the action of copulation occurs without any egg laying results?

Both yesterday and today I've seen two Barn Owls in the nest box. One seems larger than the other. Perhaps you haven't updated in the past day or so, but most definitely the second Barn Owl is back!

Benicia is in the North Bay area - not my idea of a tropical or subtropical climate. I assume, then, that our preening pair is interested in a place to roost rather than in a place to breed - at least for right now. Could they be siblings from a recent brood? Or are they more likely to be a friendly pair, maybe potential mates down the road?

I just built an Owl nesting box. It is 3' x 2' x 2'. I located it on a post that puts it approximately 14' off the ground. It moves some when the winds are up. I'm located in So. Cal. Questions for anyone that has done this before: 1) Is the height of the box high enough? 2) Does the movement (about 1 inch each way in wind) be enough to discourage owl inhabitance?
Thanks

I am just curious, but it seems every time I look at this owl in the box he or she is only on one leg, making me wonder if it lost a leg or just chooses not to use it. Any input or more knowledge on what the owl is doing would be greatly appreciated. This site is great!

Is it safe to assume that the two owlets who are hanging out in the nest box are the youngest? Also, are the parents continuing to bring them food or will they cut back, as an incentive for the owlets to leave the box and join their siblings?

I hate to ask, however, through the beginning of May, the "archive commentary" listed 7 owlets. Later, the archive commentary switched to the number 6.
Does anyone know what happened to the seventh owlet?

What a great site, I love it. In Jan. I built my box in my vineyard and in just a few weeks there they were, cant wait until I see how many little ones we have. We also have horses so mouse control is great. thanks for all the info

Perhaps it is just the lighting at this time of day, but the pictures look sharper than ever. How long until the chicks leave the nest?

How long do barn owls live

Moving the comments/chat board to an option and having the live/archive page as the main page is a much better format - thanks!

this is so cool! baby looks like a ball of fuzz.
I once saw handmade paper someone had put an owl pellet into and there were tiny mouse bones etc in it. Made beautiful paper for the inside of the book covers.

I've watched owls before and this one seems to be a very caring protective mom.

It looks like the color of the owl in the nest is different. I wonder if it's the male owl. I didn't realize that both owls take care of the chicks

How many mice does one owl eat each day? It seems like there's always a dead mouse in view of the camera. Gross!

I just saw one of the mice...
