08/29/07 19:54
Hey Guido!! When are you going to be comin back! man. We got "issues" here in Italy, Texas!! A new "family" is trying to move in on us!!
I've been checking in
08/27/07 20:38

MA/GA
Yea...cam's on
08/24/07 20:13
spiders have been busy, no one is home....and I have really missed something...Guido and Maisie? :-)

MA/GA
This is the first I have been able to...
08/22/07 00:18
check this site since Tues. morning. It says the cam is up but I don't have it. Was it on during the day?
Thanks CLO/TBN
08/17/07 18:16
For the info on the cam....looks cooler there today....
Ma/GA
101 today in Italy Tx!
08/13/07 17:14
Feels like 105, this "info" was in The Weather Channel box...
i can't the cam,
08/13/07 10:58
It hasn't worked for me in days. Also the puffin cam is in and out. Is it just me?
Hot day in Tx!
08/11/07 15:01
Temp is 97, bet it feels like 120 in the box...
Somebody was in the box
08/08/07 22:19
Couldn't tell who it was. If the hot weather would break, maybe we would see more of them.
In September?
08/08/07 19:09
Maybe later in the fall the owls will nest again; but not now when it's 94F. in the box.
well, yea!!
08/05/07 09:15
Mom's in the box...so good to see her!!

MA/GA
Thanks for getting the cam up and running
08/03/07 16:18
Now we just need our couple. Just wondering if you know that the external player doesn't seen to be working.
Cam is down & Computer is being restarted today
08/03/07 10:54
Hi everyone-
We're trying to get it restarted.
Thanks for your patience.

TBN/CLO Staff
Streaming is down
08/01/07 11:59
We are looking in to it. Thanks for your patience.

TBN/CLO staff
Is anyone having problems with streaming?
08/01/07 10:58
I lost the streaming and don't know if it is just my computer.

TOO hot.
07/31/07 17:37
It is 93. F. and 120. F. in the box in Texas and no owls! NO owls will nest this year. I bet!!
I haven't
07/29/07 20:54
been able to catch anyone at home today...:-(

MA/GA
Looks like our girl is here
07/28/07 21:47
Think that she is vocalizing.
Both home
07/28/07 07:56
I'm glad to catch them both in the box this morning, I haven't seen them in a couple of days. So much for staying in the box more.
7:20 am EDT
07/28/07 07:19
...and no one's home yet!!
MA/GA
Calling
07/26/07 23:13
As I watch her call out to her mate, I can vividly remember that "special screech" only our girl could make, I sure do miss hearing her!

Length of daylight.
07/26/07 17:28
The time of sunshine is getting shorter now; from June 21st, so I thought the owls would no longer be inclined to breed. This may not be the case for Barn owls in Texas; they can nest sucsessfully until September. Peterson.
At 3:24 PM PST
07/26/07 06:25
One owl in the box.
Well, its 9:39 EDT
07/25/07 21:38
No one is home....must be out to dinner!

MA/GA
My goodness!
07/24/07 16:15
Trying for another clutch? It's amazing to see...hope they didn't know they were being filmed.

How long would it take before she lays some eggs?

Kathe (NH/ME)
Well, Mr owl is still there
07/23/07 21:13
and it has cooled off quite a bit....just curious...they don't seem to be molting like the CA owls are...or they're tossing their feathers out the door....which I doubt, since they never tossed anything out before...:)
MA/GA

A NEW nest site.
07/22/07 16:47
I think these Italy, Texas owls will find a much better site next year for nesting.
Mrs Owl
07/21/07 07:27
looks sound asleep....but alone....Mr. Owl must still be hunting.

MA/GA
Bluebirds!
07/20/07 16:25
My Bluebirds fledged today!! I saw them yesterday peaking out. The parents seem to be "discouraging" them them jumping out while I was nearby; I didn't stay long. The male Bluebird flew to "greet" me though I was at least 30 yards away!. NO problems with SNAKES or other predators; the box is well protected! w/wi.
Streaming video picture?
07/20/07 00:02
I have none.
Nice to see someone in the box
07/19/07 20:42
I haven't been able to watch very much...but did we get sound back as well?

MA/GA
Where's his gal?
07/18/07 16:24
Did she not come home this morning?
Too hot in the box for her...
Is the box in full sun or shade?
Glad to see cooler temps in the area...

New nest attempt???
07/18/07 11:08
These two have been spending a lot more time in the box again and it looks like there may be a cache of food in front left corner. It seems pretty late for another attempt, but...has anyone seen them mating?
2 in the box
07/18/07 10:15

My first time to check in today
07/17/07 20:46
...and no one is home yet!!

MA/GA
TBN: please keep the stills
07/16/07 22:20

The stills are important to help me optimize against streaming cost. When both owls have left the box, I pause quicktime. But then, I want to see the stills so I can resume streaming when they return.

Thanks.
What fun to watch these two!
07/16/07 20:05
Oh, it's great to have live-streaming back here! They are certainly trying to keep cool.

Kathe (ME)
I can't believe it!!!

Streaming down, hopefully temporary
06/26/07 17:43
Due to extensive CAM viewing our streaming fees have put us over budget and we need to temporarily disable streaming video. Although the number of users does not appear markedly different than last year, the amount of time the streams are running on individual computers has increased 10 fold. We are hoping that with your help, we can reach our 2007 goal and reinstate the streams in the next week.

2 owls!!!
06/14/07 06:43
It's 6:38 est. time and there are 2 owls. One in front is panting heavily and it's only 73'. And I'm sure the one in the back is our noisy girl. I can hear her doing her call but very quietly. I wondeer what has been going on here. I can't be sure of the front owls sex. It could even be another female for all I know. The way it's turned and the wings held out, you can barely see the breast. Hope someone else sees this too !!!:)
Such excitement

Twittering outside last night
06/12/07 20:44
I heard twittering well outside the box last night, quarter of two AM owl time.

Perhaps we're back to mid-March, when Dude was twittering for company and eventually pulled in Our Girl with the help of a small stack of rats in the foyer.

I believe that would be consistent with the male having been the debris digger who covered or destroyed the eggs. It's generally the male who chooses a location and then advertises for a roommate, per my reading three months ago. And if he's starting over, he'd sweep away evidence of a competitor from the view of any new love interest who might stick her head through the door. Right?

So then, did Our Girl simply walk out on this (in my guess) two-timing deadbeat? If so, I think she was altogether too patient. She should have left him two months earlier.

That doesn't say she didn't have her own problems, but to me she was a more sympathetic figure.
Well

She has the biggest most expressive owl eyes I have ever seen (the years I've been watching anyway) I think if we get to see this mysterious owl for longer then a few minutes we will know if it is the same one. I hope a more experienced/aggressive female hasn't chased her away!
Just another thought

Could this be another female preparing the box for a nest? I certainly hope not...its gonna be way too hot in there for anybody!!

Just got done reading last nights posts, I see the owl returned again and stirred things up...........to be honest, from watching other night I don't think it's our momma owl, it didn't look like her, didn't even move around like her and our owl always made noise, this owl made no sounds at all. No vocal outside box this morning either, just sounds like thunder and rain. wendy :)
Anybody
06/10/07 23:23
Did anybody see what just happened? The box has been all shook up again, but I missed seeing it. Saw the owl earlier today scratching around in the box, he/she must have returned this evening.
Just thinking about ...

... the female coming back to "bury" her eggs before leaving for good gives me the willies. I know, I'm anthropomorphising again. And I probably didn't spell that correctly. ~Kara

Time to clean house,
06/09/07 12:16
Now that the couple are out so much. Maybe the box should be cleaned out? Take out the play toy legs and see if more return at a later date. Sad to see this ending to a clutch, but I don't think mom could have raised them anyway .and the dad was clearly not a good provider. Maybe with some more maturing they can try again later.

Not uncommon-late nesting season failures
06/05/07 12:03
This is the first time I have visited this web-site and scrolled through all the pictures and subtitles for each picture. What you are watching is a common occurance late in the nesting season for barn owls. (I have monitored some years as many as 500 barn owl boxes every three weeks from the beginning of the nesting season to the clean-out of the nest boxes over an 8 month period here in California.)
The small clutch size, very little if any incubation by the TX female shows all the signs that this nest will fail and the female will abandon her eggs and the nest box soon. I've seen this scenario numerous times late in the breeding season over the past 12 years and have no one answer why it happens, just some theories. Barn owls can, and sometimes do, nest year around depending on the food base. This may be a very young female that was pressed into trying to breed by the male and was not ready for motherhood. There seemed to be an ample food supply for her to have enough protein to produce a normal clutch of eggs, but the five day interval between the first and second egg was a bit unusual. If the food base is in short supply the female might lay her eggs in three day intervals and lay a smaller clutch size. In England where voles are the main food supply for barn owls, if it is a lean vole year, yearling barn owls will not be pressed into breeding. This female may have other problems that we will never understand and may never be a good breeder. Just pick up any paper and read about how weird some human beings can be in real life.
Also barn owls that nest late in the breeding season have a much higher failure rate than the ones that breed early in the season. My banding data when we get it all on the computer might show that the older more experienced birds are the early breeders and the young birds are nesting later in the season. I have so many recaptured owls banded as adults and known-aged owls banded as owlets to look at in my data.
All we can do is wish this female good luck and hope that next breeding season she has all her motherhood skills in order.

Steve, CA
Does anyone know?

I feel that we need to thank Cornell for the wonderful oppourtunity they have given us. We might not like what has transpire in the nest but this same scenario happens in the nesting habitat each and every year to some extent. We never know the hardships because there was nothing on tape or stills or live streaming. The conditions are not always favorable for wildlife parents, as we have seen with these owls. Nature is not always rosy or fair! Thank you Birdhouse Network...BH/OH

Was just wondering if we could get an update as to the goings on at nestbox site.....is there still activity and noise, is this why our owls aren't at box other then for a few minutes at night?? Or could it be that maybe she had to lay another egg during wedding and cleanup and did so elsewhere?? Theres still no sound so we wouldn't be able to hear if they are near by, can you please let us know when you get a chance......thank you!! MAMMA YOUNG?
06/03/07 00:08
Just wondering if this female is young. She doesn't seem to know she is suppose to incubate these much wanted and expected eggs. Know there has been discussion regarding possible late incubation being ok. But from our cams of last year and this in Calif., seems like this female is a little confused as to what to do with the eggs. Hope all goes well, but I am concerned. Any comments out there? Thanks

He arrived with no food again, mated, and left.
Two hours later
06/01/07 02:02
Maybe I made a mistake about TX time. It was 9 pm Calif time -- maybe that was midnight in TX. Anyway, it's two hours later (10:45 Calif.) and I checked in. There's the Mom. She is wide awake and perching in the sleeping position standing tall on one leg. At this point I am getting quite convinced that she doesn't have the needed nesting instinct, and is not sufficiently driven to incubate the eggs.

I really wonder how much this has to do with noise or disturbance from the outside. It could be she isn't being fed enough. It could be, as others have guessed, that she is the "secondary" mate, and that's why she isn't fed enough. It could be she is inexperienced, or just doesn't have as good instincts driving her as a "better" owl would have.

It could be that these eggs can still be viable until she settles down to some serious incubating. Another post told of this happening with other types of owls.

Probably no one knows, including the Cornell folks.

This is interesting and we may yet learn a lot as we keep watching. No other way to find out but wait and see. I guess by July we will have found out what happened. It's like a hair raising suspense movie, but in REAL time -- exciting, even scary, and very slow all at once. I find the whole thing a mind-expanding adventure. Thank you thank you owl cam.

Observations 11 pm TX time
06/01/07 00:25
The box was empty, the 3 eggs all alone as they have been every time I checked today. The pair entered. The female went and sat on the eggs. The male perched on one leg in the foreground. After a very few minutes (maybe 3 or 4), he left. She stood up off the eggs, and rotated them a bit. Then, still not sitting back down on them, she crouched over them and started to vocalize. After a few minutes I left the video to write this. At that point -- about 11:15 or so, she had only sat on the eggs for 5 minutes or less.

I was interested to read the reference in the staff post to "the wedding". I guess the implication is that all that noise was some kind of prep for a wedding taking place right there.

Some answers to viewer questions
06/01/07 00:14
Predicting natural events and especially animal behavior is riddled with uncertainty, which is why most scientists observe and catalog behaviors, rather than predict behavioral outcomes with any great certainty. This is one of the great aspects of animal behavior: it is unpredictable and variable. This event, while frustrating to watch, can increase our knowledge of animal behavior and offer us additional information about how animals responds to disturbance, for example.

That said, it is possible that she will abandon these eggs, and while we would be very disappointed with this outcome, this is not a novel or unique situation, birds regularly abandon eggs for various reasons. Research has shown that birds are more likely to abandon nests earlier in the cycle because they have invested less effort than later in the cycle. By the time young are in the nest, parents have invested more effort in the laying, incubation, and nestling periods and are less likely to abandon.

That said, these are not hard and fast rules, and we will have to wait and see the outcome. If she does abandon, we hope that she can begin another attempt in the near future.

You can find more information on Barn Owls in our Bird Bios section or you can check the links at the right of the page from All About Birds or BNA online.

The mic has been turned off because we didn't feel it was appropriate or in good taste to broadcast the wedding to the Internet. We will turn the sound back on after June 1st.

In the mean time, we ask for your patience and understanding. We have said it before, but we are very understaffed – any delay in our response is not because we don’t care it is because we can’t keep up with the huge volume of questions. The questions happen in rapid succession and there are many cams we administer. However, we have learned a valuable lesson about this type of open and anonymous forum and we will need to re-evaluate this type of forum in the future.

As a result we have decided to take some of the earlier comments offline because of their exceedingly harsh tones.
