Sorry you lost the nest to the snake. How come it didn't get the ducks? Is the baffle different on the duck boxes? Does it creep you out a bit to see that these fellows are around? Sorry you got some "heat" from viewers who don't follow the cam site postings carefully and don't understand the set up. What is equally terrifying is how dangerous ignorance can be and how one can inadvertantly become the focus of it.

I agree that TOO! many nests on TBN have met an unfortunate "demise". I am the one who protested VEHEMENTLY about the situation in TX. regarding the Barn owls. A "wedding party" of course cannot be anticipated. I have Bluebirds nesting in my boxes in southern WI that are about ready to fledge and go off on their own. Our Bluebird Restoration Society provides much information about providing nest sites for Bluebirds and PROTECTION from predators. This is MOST UNEXCEPTABLE from the CORNELL LAB. of ORNITHOLOGY!! w/wi.

This is just unbelievable... first the phoebes and now this. Life in the wild is dicey at best, but it is still heart breaking.

What kind of Predator guard was on the box. I use the long "Barrel" type and am mortified that this could happen to me, as I have newborn BB chicks in my Nestbox at the present time.

Hi, All:
How sorry that the little nestlings were taken by a rat snake! The picture is so ugly!!
Let's hope that the parents can produce one more clutch of eggs.

I've been at a conference all last week so just now getting caught up. Jennifer asked me to post a beautiful color photo of the newly hatched nestlings on my website, which I did this morning.
Then I came here and heard the sad news. This is the box that I helped (really I mostly just watched) to install the new predator guard, which makes it even sadder!
It's difficult to look at the picture now, but if you'd like to, here is the URL: http://www.karenleabo.com/nestbox.html

All the storms they weathered and such, you'd think that old rat snake could have scrounged up something better than a bunch of chicks. Creepy there are actually pics of it getting in there. Girls, I was looking forward to more of the BBB discussions and such. I think of myself as an honorary member, I post occasionally, butnever put my initials, so here goes...
Em, Sachse TX (like 30 min south west of Greenville) BTW, you may get me as a visitor someday. My friends live by L3, so I come that way a bunch. When you have a "birding" party let me know. =)

that the nest has been depredated by a snake. The nest box does have a predator guard but snakes are often quite skilled at getting past the guards. We are saddened by the loss, and events such as this remind us how vulnerable birds are to predation, which is the number one cause of nest failure. We will post pictures later today.

FYI. Cam host Jennifer. When "monitoring" Bluebird nest boxes; is there a "window of days" when one SHOULD NOT open the box because the young are in that stage when they could be "scared" to prematurely leave the box? Our WI. Bluebird Society encourages checking the boxes at least once a week during the season. I have only 2 boxes and don't always keep track of the days; egg hatching to fledging. Thanks. w/wi. P.S. When I checked the box recently; one of the parents [the male no less] dived bombed me; this has not happened before.

My first BB story...hope I don't bore everyone to tears...so here goes....
I'll skip all the scouting and nest building and guarding of nest, etc.
Hatching day....Mother's Day..(coincidence...I think not)
I go out to add more suet and sun flower seed...and something bops me on the head..hmmmmm what could that be....don't know...so I go about my business...and..BOP, on the head, again..I look up and I am being dive bombed by Mr. Bluebird...the mrs. is flying frantically around the area...This is my first nest, so I think...there must be a cat or something in the area and they are really agitated..then dad swoooooooops down,in attack mode again, aiming for my person...this time, mom in hot pursuit...I duck and literally crawl(no joke) my way back to the door...bluebirds on my tail....freaked me out....I stood (inside), watching from the window...Mom and dad settled themselves down, positioned themselves on a tree branch across from the box....changed their song...and one by one, "called" each babe out of the box...one would fledge and a parent would follow it, while the other parent continued "the call"...this continued until all 5 babes were out of the box....this family stayed in the area all summer...and the juvies all winter..(they picked up some friends along the way) because I kept them well supplied in mealworms...every night I would go out at dusk and whistle..they would come, and I'd put out the mealworms..(probably coincidence)...it really amazed my friends. WEll, that's my story. I've had other BB nests, and I've been around for other fledgings, but never parents that acted like this...at another time...I'll share the "Bluebird with the Broken Heart" story...
Ok....somebody else's turn...:-D

I'm sitting here watching Mama BB on her eggs. And I'm wondering...how BORING must it be for her?? Just sitting there...minute after minute...hour after hour...I know the birds don't "think" (or at least I don't THINK they do) like we do...but ya just GOTTA wonder! OK, I'll get off my soapbox, er, nesting box now.. LOL!
