I wonder what happened to the 5th Egg that didn't hatch? Maybe it's underneath the Pinestraw?
04/24/07 16:47
Did anyone see what time the last Bluebird Fledged?
Good Luck to the whole Family, they made it through the Cold, when all odds were against them.

This last little guy just can't seem to "pull the trigger". He will, some of us just aren't as brave as others.

In case anyone missed it, TBN answered at 10:13 this morning ("patience, please"). Their project leader was out of town during this time. I think that many of us were upset about the events that were occuring, and now we know why there was no answer.
Obviously, we all love birds or we wouldn't be watching with such interest.

Looks like the 2 decided to stay put through the night. I would expect that they will fledge soon.

Hope all of you Bluebird Watchers out there will consider putting up a Bluebird Box. It's not too late, most Bluebirds have 3 Clutches a year and we are only on #1. If you do, please, please do it the right way, on a Metal Pole with a Predator Guard (Baffel), and buy a Nest Box that has the approval of the Audubon Society. Do it with a neighbor if you feel overwhelmed. This is my 3rd year of Bluebirding and I have successfully Fledged 58 Bluebirds from the 2 Boxes in my yard.
Turst me, it's worth all the effort. Bluebirds were in a SEVERE decline not that many years ago, and the Audubon Society and their faithful followers have single-handedly "brought them back"!!
P.S. The best part is that once they trust you, the parents almost always bring the babies back to visit and possibly spend the Winter with you.

It was my 2nd Clutch, so a little later in the year, thus about an hour of light left. Still, it was dusk, and the parents didn't seem AT ALL pleased. They were flying around like crazy. A week later, all four Fledglings showed up at my Mealworm Feeder, so all made it. I think that the camera is frozen and would be willing to bet that at least one fledged this evening.

There appears to be only 3 nestlings. We opened the nestbox at approx. 9:40 this morning, and we could only see three. We did not lift and handle to count the nestlings.......we saw only what we could see without disturbing them excessively. Temp was 63, bright sun, slight breeze, at the above time.

The abnormally cold weather that we have just gotten thru had me thinking that "NO WAY" could the eggs hatch and that the bluebird family could survive. Low temps at the nest location were into the upper teens.
More normal spring weather is here at last and this family came thru with only one egg not hatching. The Parent bluebirds are feeding the 4 hatchlings well.
We are not opening the nestbox vests until the weather gets warmer.

This is my first experience with bluebirds nesting. We had 4 eggs, although I'm not sure how many have hatched and survived. I have noticed the male and female carrying away big pieces of (?)......thanks for your explanation that they have been carrying away the eggshells. I got on the internet to try to find out what "it" was and you have answered my question. Thanks so much!

The bluebird family made it through the cold night, wonderful pictures.

We have just now gone to HES and looked at the picture on the classroom TV & computer monitor. We could only see one egg and possibly there are 4 babies. Three babies & mother are very active.
The round trip to HES takes over an hour. The school board has given us a key so that we can get into the classroom.
All of the electronics appeared to be working as they should be...so...maybe the problem is on Cornell's end.
Temp is 40 now... last night was 25.....25 is forcast for tonight. Winds 10 to 30 for last few days.
It will be almost impossible for the bluebird family to get thru this.
Pray for the best,

It is snowing heavily at my house right now in northern NC. I am watching my female bluebird with the infrared camera incubate her 5 eggs. I hope this nest and mine will be ok.

Low last night was in the upper 20s at HES. The temps will trend lower for the next few nights & days.
We think it is best not to open the nestbox and disturb the female during these trying times.......so the pictures will have to be our information. Pray all goes well.

I know that Dad had no Brood Patch to brood the nestlings, but with the coming cold weather, will he stay in the box at night to try to raise the temperature in there?
04/04/07 17:00
Things are not looking too hopeful for these babies. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Two now. My bb's are on the exact same schedule as these as far as when they laid but no babies for me yet.
04/04/07 11:17
Lows into the 20s are forecast before this cold snap is over. This mother bluebird will try to save her family.
Vents in the nestbox are closed and let's pray for a miracle.

How adorable

I have been looking at forecasts, and it looks like the eggs are going to hatch during this cold snap. I hope the mother can keep the young warm and find plenty of food.

Last night at my house the female bluebird went in the box at 8:15. At this time it was pitch black outside. I know she went in because I have an infrared camera installed in the nest box. In the past 3 broods at my house ,I have found incubation begins the night before the last egg is laid. This is different than what I have read in most books. I dont know if this is an exception, but since it has happened 4 times in a row, I think it is what all bluebirds do.
03/28/07 15:30
What period of time after hatching do the bluebirds fledge out of the box?

I don't know when this bluebird started nest building etc. and I was wondering when do you think the chicks will began to hatch?

Looks like she laid the fifth egg late today.
03/21/07 11:08
She seems to be spending a lot of time on the nest this morning. Maybe she will stop at four eggs.
03/21/07 10:12
I see 4 eggs!
03/20/07 10:32
And then there were 3 !!
03/20/07 10:31
I checked in this morning at 0930 CST and there were 3 eggs. No momma. She will be back I am sure.
03/19/07 10:57
The hen is on the nest just before ten o'clock central, maybe laying.
