There is a bluebird nest with one egg up at my grandmas and I am afraid of house wrens have pierced it. House wrens starting putting sticks in there before and my dad removed them and now since there is a bluebird nest I am afraid with the bluebirds using the nest box that the house wrens will be back again and again. Is there any way to protect the bluebirds from them? I try to moniter the nest boxes as much as I can but I do not want to disturb the nest too much and there was a little white streak on the egg. That gives me the idea it was pierced by house wrens!

We also got a bluebird house and 2 weeks ago we took a peek and saw 5 eggs but today we took another peek and we saw one chick and two eggs left. Any explanation what happened to the other two?

A few days ago I watched for about 40 minutes before a parent bird came to feed the young. Sometimes I have noticed that they have their mouths open a lot but no feedings are seen. Just wondering. Maybe I don't watch enough.

The students at Heath Elementary School in McCracken County Ky have learned many things concerning the life cycle of bluebirds.
We probably had the first successful bluebird nestboxcam in Kentucky. My wife and I donated most of the the money and labor for the nestbox with camera. The first year our expenses were in excess of $ 1,000.00 for Heath and various other schools. We have spent considerable amounts of money in the following years.
Denny Alvey, a HES parent, contacted Cornell and made the computer hookup to Cornell. Lisa Alvey, HES teacher and coordinator of "PROJECT BLUEBIRD" has won state honors for the outstanding work that she has done.
All of us, students and adults, have learned from
"PROJEST BLUEBIRD"
Some of the things that we learned were heartbreaking and some were joyful.
We encourage anyone, who has the good interests of the students, to fund and work with a project such as this.
We would do it again,

What a coincendence!! My nest had three hatch yesterday and two today for a total of 5. All five hatched. Last brood had 5 only 2 hatched and only 1 fledged. Had to pick him up and put him back in the nest until he could really fly. Only took another hour before he fledged and was successful. First brood of the season had 4 and none hatched. This is my second year blue birding. Feed them meal worms that I grew over the last 6 months. What a wonderful hobby!!!

This is our first year that the Bluebirds began to use one of our houses. Placed it lower to the ground than the first ones that we build. Stayed away so as to not disurb them. Saw one chick leave the nest 5/27/07. Stayed in the grass hopping around trying its wings for close to half and our. Both parents flew by,landed with, and worked with the chick until it finally worked its way to a small tree where it worked its way up the trunk then flew about 20 yards landing on a smaller bush. Lost sight of it at that point but it looked as though it would make it alright. Only chick we have ever seen learning to fly. Think this is the first nesting and will observe for more. The recent cold weather killed 2 of the 5 eggs in the first nesting, even tho we had stopped-up all the vent holes.
During this hot weather second nesting the vents are open and roof&sides are shielded from the sun.

Right after posting the last message, I took another look and it sure does look like there are five! Surprise! Ain't Mother Nature great?
05/25/07 19:08
I got a pretty good look at them and saw only four. They are part of Nature and are NATURALLY beautiful! I'm having the best time watching them!
05/25/07 15:33
LOL!!!! They look fine to me; they are BABIES! and some say, "only a mother could love". That's the way it is. It is nice though that we humans can find beauty [or cuteness] in other species. I wonder............ does the mother ROBIN, as she watches you stroll by [beneath her nest] with your baby carriage say "wwhooo!!!... what an UGLY baby????

So happy the camera is back on. I put up two boxes this week. I will enjoy waiting for these to hatch as I wait on a pair for my own box.

Everytime I check in there is no parent on the eggs. Am I just missing mom, or has she abandoned the nest like the other bluebird? Anybody else see them?

The first egg has been layed inside the tree swallow nest at my grandmas. Too bad I didn't know how to do all the putting a cam inside the birdbox and figuring out how to set up the process to a computer!

This was quite surprise! I fianlly saw our state bird for the very first time. I saw this at my parents house. I walk into the kitchen to see this blue colored bird sitting on one of my parents feeder poles and I thought it was a tree swallow but the tail wasn't forked and I realized it was an eastern bluebird! What a wonderful expierence!

At this time, we are seeing the inside of nestbox B.
Yesterday afternoon, the old dirty nesting material from the first successful nesting & fledging was cleaned out of nestbox A and the electronic hookup swithced to nestbox B.
The teacher supervising the electronics and nestcam will electronically switch between nestboxes A & B to watch for nestbuilding. The nestboxes do not look the same inside.......watch and you will be able to know when the switching accurs.
