Comments - Eastern Bluebird (CCES2)
06/23/07 16:26
I'm an elementary school teacher, and we have experienced our first eastern bluebirds this spring. We erected a house when we saw the pair checking out other boxes in our courtyard. They were competing with house sparrows, so we moved the house to our meadow where the pair quickly built their nest, and laid 5 eggs which hatched last weekend. I kept wondering what was happening inside the box. Now I know. "Our" 5 nestlings are 7 days old today. The NYS Bluebird Society will band them next week.

...we're back to the dreaded "black screen"

After two earlier hatchings to date I wish to nominate our present female, "Mother of the Year". The first nest was four, the second five and now the third with five. I have taped the second and now taping the third. What a wonderful experience. We expect the third to hatch around the 28th of this month.

Finally, a bluebird has landed in my yard...atop one of the houses. But the house was on its side (somebody/animal must have knock it over) and the nesting material is on the ground.
Any ideas of what to do?

Just a thought that might apply, greater the hunger the quicker to gape widely for food. Mouth interiors are often brightly colored in many bird species which probably reenforces a quicker delivery of the food item. Small insects are not usually divided and shared in the case of songbirds. In contrast ospreys routinely tear apart larger fish for feeding to chicks as we see at the os cam. ER KBS Cam co-host

Just how do the parents figure out which nestling should get the insect? Or is the insect divided up? Sorry if this seems like a silly question!

We'll look into the problem. Thank you for notifying us.

It appears that the afternoon sun is shining in the entrance hole. At 16:34 there is a large curcular area of sun on the incubating female and surrounding nest material. I manage several large trails and know that this can be a real problem. Even with ventilation, the interior of the nestbox will heat up like an oven if it goes on for long. The box needs o be turned out of the sun or a better overhanging roof added. Please advise what will be done about this. Thank you

We recently installed a cam in our bluebird box for the first time. The pair we have started their nest the exact day as CCES and has the same number eggs but she skipped laying on Friday so the 5th egg was laid a day behind the CCES nest on May 27th. It will be fun to watch and compare. I am thrilled to have my cam box and see everything up close! I highly recommend it, an excellent learning experience along with the Cornell/Birdhouse Network web sites!

I am thinking about putting a nestbox for sparrows. Don't sparrows need nestboxes too?

what do you do with abandoned nests and eggs?

Nestbox is ready for a new start. This second nesting attempt has a much better chance because the weather is more normal than the several days of cold weather during the first nesting.
Best wishes....for success.

Since the eggs should have hatched about April 19, two weeks ago, the eggs certainly will not hatch. The female has not been observed at the nest in several days; therefore, the nest and eggs have been abandoned and will be removed from the nesting box. The nest is very unusual in that bluebird feathers are incorporated into the nest. CCES has a pertmit to display abandoned nests and eggs, so this special nest and eggs will become part of a school educational exhibit. TS/KBS/ER Cam hosts
