There were two woodpeckers in the box last night [8-11-07]; lounging on the "couch".

But this doesn't look like the same box as before. I could swear the drainage holes are bigger. Have we switched?
And that does look like a couch to me, LOL.

Maybe Acorn woodpeckers prefer empty boxes [no shavings] for nesting sites. I put up a box originally for Kestrals. A pair of eastern Flickers moved in instead. They "chipped" out some parts of the bottom and sides of the box. I was just wondering if putting wood chips/shavings [almost full] would "satisfy" a woodpeckers urge to "chip away" at a hole and preserve my box. Thanks.

Good Morning All,
Apologies all around for the delay in briefing you wonderful cam viewers of the goings-on! Here's the latest...The camera is down for some inexplicable reason right now 8:15 MST, soon to be rectified, but I will give you all a daily report anyway from now on as the monsoon storms require us to shut down and unplug daily now.
This morning the female ACWO (bird shorthand, for Acorn Woodpecker!) was seen bringing in acorns and looking for places to stash them. She succeeded in squeezing one in the upper left corner, which you'll be able to see. She came and went a few times with acorns in her beak, but didn't put them down. Its a mystery to all of us here why these two are not breeding. If they are brother and sister, they won't to be sure, but why were they in the box together? We have a research project going on at the ranch called MoMs (see 'Kate's Field Notes' on our website) and I have consulted them too as well as CLO. We are all puzzled, which is why these cams are so valuable as research tools, a gateway into the secret life of cavity-nesters!
All we can do is watch and take notes! They always give me pleasure watching them with or without nestlings.

I was reading through your latest field notes and I read about this acorn woodpecker hanging out at the food pole close to the box. Is this what she will do until she lays eggs, and what role if any will the male play? I also read that you have a large variety of birds nesting right now, but no other woodpeckers were mentioned. Is this typical for this time of year, or are you seeing fewer woodpeckers then usual.
Thank you in advance!

And here she is. Although, I was wondering ... I think I saw two different birds in here tonight. One I saw just briefly as it was leaving, it looked solid black with a round tail.
This one has a white back and a square tail. Or is it just the way she has her wings and tail folded for exiting the box that makes her look solid black? ~Kara

After reading Katie's latest field notes it sounds like you have a lot of bird nest activity going on there. Glad to read that the elf owl has so many eggs. I'm also very curious about the Mexican Jay that may be building a nest there, as I'm very attached to my loyal pair of Western Scrub Jay's (I'm in Ca.) Your latest essay on our ecosystem was excellent and I highly recommend viewers to visit your sight and read it along with the field notes. Looking forward to seeing some Acorn nestlings real soon!

I noticed that there is no nesting materials, such as wood shavings, ect. What do acorn woodpeckers put in the box? Do they just use what they manage to "peck" off the box?

I just went through your entire web site and I want to let you know that I truly admire your conservation efforts. The essays touched my heart, and I really enjoyed reading the blog and the field notes. It sounds as if you have quite a few flycatchers nesting, they are one of my favorites!
Thank you for all that you are doing for nature.

Is the cam broken? Haven't seen it in awhile. Just wondered if you can see that too. Maybe it's a cornell glitch?

for the info you have provided. We are amature cam watchers, enjoying what you are providing for us. I will continue to watch, despite the empty box !! Keep up the good work birdland ranch!!!:)

Nobody wants to use it. sad to see. Was hoping to see nature at this nest.maybe they found a good site in a real tree.

Anybody see any birdies here lately? I haven't since the owl picture.

Lots of species checking out the vacant "apartment" I think any one of these potential renters would be interesting to watch. My vote is for the woodpecker though. I've never seen a family of them up close. Sher in PA

I think that may be an owl in the box, definitely not a woodpecker!

Is there any activity at the nest box? Can you fill us in on what is happening there? I would guess that the woodpecker continued to make her nest and lay eggs.

I'm getting curious to know if the woodpeckers nested in this box. Are there any efforts being made to re-establish the connection? Thanks.

someone or something appears to have cleaned out the box, any one know?
04/04/07 17:40
It appears that, as in prevous years, the Acorn Woodpecker is attempting to somewhat enlarge the entrance hole. If the woodpecker is successful, will that deter Elf Owls?
04/04/07 10:50
Is that the woodpecker in the box this morning?

I just saw a beak of a bird in the hole. It looked to be that of a bluebird.
