An Osprey was on the nest around 8:40 am. today; a few images later there were two until 8:50am. They both looked like adults. The last image was up-close!! An Osprey eyeing the camera; a SHOCKER! It looks like there is another pine cone in the nest.

There was an Osprey on the nest at 8:15 to 8:30 am. today. The throat and chest was mostly white.

How great to see the clear shots. Thanks for keeping the cam up a little longer. Have enjoyed the viewing experience, my first.
07/19/07 15:16
Viewers: Please watch and see if you see both adults at the nest, perhaps not at the same time. The male will have a white chest and the female will have brown spots at the top of the breast, the "necklace". Both will have solid brown wing (top side) and backs. Please comment on seeing the addult male and/or female. The adult male appears to be at the nest on July 16 in the saved image below the nest. Probably a less experienced juv was in the accident. During a recent visit to our osprey live cam site to see what might be learned about the deceased osprey, I looked at the cam lens with 7 power binoculars. I can not say for certain at this point but it appears that a spider may not be at fault after all. A spider web did block the lens several nights. The present lens obstruction appears from a distance, to far to say for certain, that a mud dauber may have been starting a nest covering most of the lens surface. We will lower the cam fairly soon and know for certain. Ospreys could be heard calling in the area. If we could have seen the wing, back, or eyes of the deceased osprey it would be easy to determine if the osprey were an adult or not. I have observed young ospreys catching their own fish perhaps on or if not near fledge day. I think with shad so abundant at Lake Barkley that one adult will be able to provide as needed if this is the case while the youngsters perfect their fishing skills. If anyone in the MoonBay area sees both adults at the nest please post. Ed Ray, KEEP cam host.

very, very sad about this loss...you know, I guess this happens all the time in nature, but because we have the privilege of looking into their world, via cam, we are now witness to the harsh realities of nature. Of course a power pole (tho necessary to humans) is all to often a hazard for beautiful wildlife. I do hope we get more updates soon. Thanks for keeping us informed...so very sad....

1 Wing and Trail of Feathers going toward woods. No doubt a bobcat or coyote. Predator paradise as turkey and deer both feed within 100 feet of the osprey nest at times. We moved the nest so electricution would not be a possibility, however the male continued to sit on the barrier cross arm after it was installed. The transformer pole where the osprey was electrocuted was the original nest site. WHYYYYYYY a transformer pole????? Does anyone know if this has happened any where else?
07/06/07 23:09
As I was leaving the condo this evening I noticed a dead osprey at the base of the power pole adjacent to the nest. I do not know if it is one of the adults or the young. There was a brief power loss this morning. I am assuming that one of the birds landed on the transformer located on the power pole. I will investigate closer in the morning. From what I see it looks like the ospreys are gone. If it wasen't for that dreaded spider on the cam I could really tell. Oh well.....God speed ospreys.
07/03/07 11:42
The babies (can I really still call them that?) were perched on the part of the edge of the nest that wasn't obscured by dreaded spider web. So big and beautiful. They look ready to go.

It is disappointing that the cam at the Osprey nest has been obscured with a spiders web. Maybe they [spiders] are saying; Hey!! wer'e just as important too in the "web" of life!! We want a cam too!! Showing how we build our webs? A "mud daubber" building it's home for the young? OK. maybe there is a site for "insect" cams. I want to thank the Cornell Lab. for the opportunity to view the early life of birds in their nests; most enjoyable and insightful. As far as "doing something" about a nest cam being obscured in the future, maybe you can give NASCAR or the IRL [Indy Racing League] a call. They have on-board cams that rotate on occasion to "clean" a lens; of course that would be for debris that was actually on the lens. Oh well!! Good luck!

Last night we were viewing our osprey family thru a perfect spider web. I have wondered if our camera has had a partial spider web in front of the lens recently during the day since part of the image at times appears to be a bit blurred? The morning sun also causes some glare on the images. Over-all I think we have had the sharpest osprey images to date with our new camera. This is our 4th successful osprey cam in as many years. I got to watch Mom, in person, last Sunday afternoon. Although I was across a road and easily 60 ft away she had an eye on me the whole time. To see the two adults for real and then to get to watch the babies on the camera is just amazing!
05/25/07 16:06
Sometimes the babies and the parent Osprey are so close to the edge of the nest; do they ever fall out? Also, the hatchlings seem to not have enough strength in their necks and are lieying down all streched out.
05/24/07 16:51
I've been watching the nest for several minutes - at 3:49 central time it appears that a baby might be laying on the other side of the nest away from the mom and siblings? This wouldn't be that unusual for older babies - but 2 of them appear to being shaded by the parent while the other one appears to be lying by itself. This could be camo lol maybe I'm actually seeing part of the nest. Has something happened to one of the babies???

I've been watching another nest in Maryland. Something happened to one of the parents - probably the male - while the eggs were being incubated - the remaining osprey took care of the eggs by herself for almost a week - when she did leave the nest to hunt, a crow took advantage of the unguarded nest and destroyed the eggs. Is a sad thing to see but is part of nature. Generally you will find that one parent will remain with the nest - until the babies are bigger - even then - one will usually remain close by. Is interesting right now watching the mom shade the babies with her body. I live in the area - but I don't know if we have year round resident eagles - they can also be a problem at the nest in Maryland.
05/24/07 09:41

She had a fish nearby and when the image showed her head down where the hatchlings are I could finally make out what appeared to be the baby birds. That was a RELIEF because it has been a little difficult to make out the form of the hatchlings amongst the debri of the nest. I may even be seeing one unhatched egg, but not sure. Interesting activity on the nest today - temps here in W KY are 80+ and the male is shading the female. Has anyone seen a chick? I want to post a better website than I did earlier - more direct. They have excellent cams on both eagle/osprey nests along with eagle/osprey facts and a web log. The site is: http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/ From there scroll down and click on either osprey/eagle cam - from there click on the links on the right to read the web log. A great site - I've been watching for 3 years and both eagle/opsrey are fascinating. Is also a great site to get some tips on behavior. The eagles are about 2+ months old - and the osprey just laid an egg over the weekend - they had 2 females competing for the nest and egg laying was delayed this year. Hope you enjoy.
