I think I have a pair that began nesting in my box yesterday. I'm almost positive I've identified the male (he's been flitting around my deck), but the female does not look like photos I've seen. She is much darker, in fact, I can't see any yellow on her at all. Also, there is no water source on my property. The river isn't too far off, & there's a nearby lake, but this just seems strange from everything I've read about them. Mom is filling the nest with sticks & it's almost up to the hole. (I have a camera mounted inside the box.) I'm in Northern KY. Any comments?

When we were having storm problems, I indicated on the 11th that all eggs had hatched. Probably this actually happened on the 10th when I was having difficulty monitoring. So today's fledging would probably be the 10th day since hatching.
Cornell (as well as several bird books) states 11 days for fledging. There's been a lot of rain and an abundance of food, so that might have speeded it up a day.
Our banders said that the chicks looked good to go yesterday when they were banded. Anyway, Prothonotaries fledge fast!

The hatchlings appear to be changing color, although I can't really tell if it is just the way the picture comes across, or true color change, anybody know how soon they change to the yellow/green color?

I don't know of too many birds that place their nests over open water [so much] like the Pronothotary, except for egrets, herons. They seem to all place their nests in a cavity of some kind.
05/19/07 17:42
All six were banded this afternoon and were quickly snuggling together when put back in the nest.
05/16/07 20:12
2 feedings in the past 10 minutes!
05/16/07 17:19
Of all the "wood warblers" that I know, is this one the "only" one that will nest in a cavity? Does anybody know how [or why] this "evolved"?

What a wonderful thing to find on Mother's Day. A friend sent me notice of the site and it helped make my Mother's Day really special.

Prothonotary Warblers, "Golden Swamp Warblers", nest in swamps and such and taking care of the nestbox and camera is much more difficult than taking care of a Bluebird nestbox and camera in a nice short grass lawn.
Let's give a big Texas YEEHAW for Heard's great effort.

As of today, all of the eggs have hatched, and mother and babies are doing fine!
So very sorry that we sustained storm damage to our equipment at the remote transmitter site in the wetlands, just as the eggs were ready to hatch. This same storm, with flooding and downed trees, has made this site very difficult to access.
Hope to be back on camera with a backup lower power wireless system soon, while we repair our main system. Will keep you posted.

Hi Folks,
Access to the site is difficult due to
downed trees. Loney reports he will be
trying to troubleshoot & fix this as soon as he can- but will try to periodically check in with updates on the warblers.

We're still fighting an intermittant problem with our video capture card, but i've turned on the circuit to Cornell to give the latest status. At a little after 7am, a 5th Prothonotary egg was laid. These are being displayed now.
Eary yesterday, Sandy Campbell, our nestbox expert at the Heard, and I removed the Cowbird egg, and installed a door with a smaller hole to reduce the possiblity of Cowbird retaliation for the egg removal as several bird articles have suggested. The normal 1-1/2 inch "Bluebird" hole was replaced with a 1-1/4 inch hole, which is supposed to be too small for the Cowbird.
We're changing out all of the doors of our several other Prowarbler nests today. I hope that this will eleminate any further concern about the Cowbird problem.
Our transmission to Cornell will be pretty infrequent today until we fix our problem.

I'm sorry, but we're having problems with our video capture card at the Heard, and will have to suspend transmissions to this site until we can fix the problem, which I hope is soon.
We noticed on our video monitor this morning that the Prowarbler had laid a 4th egg.

will this cause the female to abandon the eggs?
04/25/07 12:44
The only solution, next time, or right away, is to put a Restrictor on the hole so the Cowbird cannot lay another egg. I do this with my Bluebird Boxes, should a Chickadee happen to nest in one, otherwise, I have seen Bluebirds (and I LOVE them) destroy a Chickadee Nest and Eggs. They can't help it, it's in their territoral nature to do so.

I can see it clearly on the television monitor here at the Heard.

I agree that there should only be 3 eggs this morning, but they look pretty much the same size to me. Is the hole in the Nestbox big enough to allow a Cowbird in? If it is a Cowbird Egg, can it legally be removed? Cowbirds have caused the ruination of many of my Cardinal nests. They usually hatch first and are so much larger that they get all the food. But if there is nothing that can be done, then we'll just have to wait and see.
Maybe, when they have the time to do it, TBN can go back over the tape and see what happened.

There are now 4 eggs in the nest. One looks bigger than the other 3. It must be a cowbird egg.
04/24/07 09:35
And now there is two eggs!
