Daily Highlights

May 22 - A nice shot of the female with one egg left.

May 21 - The last egg is still in the nest.

May 18 - The female comes to the nest, but this is the only image of her today.

May 17 - We hope that the last egg survives!

May 16 - It is sad to report that just one minute ago, there were two eggs in the nest.

May 15 - The female is still checking on the eggs but the time she spends in the nest box is decreasing.

May 14 - Unfortunately, another egg disappeared this morning. Two undeveloped eggs were found near the nest box, decreasing the possibility that it was a predator and increasing the possibility that the female bluebird may be removing non-viable eggs.

May 13 - Five minutes later, only three eggs are visible.  It is hard to know exactly what happened, but predation is a likely cause, even though the box is outfitted with predator guards.

May 13 - Four eggs are easily seen this afternoon.

May 12 - The male pays a welcome visit just before 9:00 am!

May 11 - A great image of the female as she continues to incubate the eggs!

May 10 - The average temperature of the eggs during incubation is approximately 34o Celsius or 93o Fahrenheit.

May 9 - Scientists have observed that the incubation period of Eastern Bluebirds in S. Carolina is shorter for summer clutches than for eggs laid in the spring.

May 8 - It has been approximately one week since incubation started.  Hatching should begin within the next four to twelve days!

May 7 - We received this image this morning of only four eggs in the nest.  It is still being determined if one of the five eggs could have been a cowbird egg.

May 5 - A cute image of the female as incubation continues.

May 4 - A nice shot of the male peeking in on the eggs.

May 3 - It appears that the clutch is complete.  Since incubation begins with the arrival of the penultimate (next to last) or ultimate (last) egg, incubation likely began two to three days ago.

May 1 - The fifth egg was laid just before 12:00 noon!

Apr. 30 - Our first image of the fourth egg!

Apr. 29 - The third egg arrived at around 10:00 am!

Apr. 28 - The second egg was laid at about 10:30 am!

Apr. 27 - The first image of the first egg came in at 11:00 am this morning!

Apr. 26 -  Once the female decides the nest is complete, it will take her eight days or so to lay her first egg.

Apr. 25 - The construction of this bluebird's nest appears to be nearing completion. Once a threatened species, bluebird populations have been greatly improved by efforts to provide them with artificial cavities, in the form of "nest boxes."

Apr. 24 - A bluebird's nest is built exclusively by the female. Here her tail feathers are visible as she exits through the nest box door after delivering some dried grass.
