It just dawned on me...little slow this am....Our little one we were sooooooo worried about...not seeing him move...was playing possum all along...I suspected as much, but now that the nest is empty (or so it appears) I am sure...that little booger...had us sooooo worried.

So I rushed out to scare the crows away, grabbed the nestling and chucked the baby out to the group of fledglings. I don't know if they got together or not. Another female adult landed on the pond. Maybe that's the other mom. After a while I'll go out to see if there's one lone peeping baby. I know I got him close so I think he'll get with mom

She left the box, I presume to eat, at 5:50:10 pm Central time.
I'm a little worried about this nest. Last year I had a really strange one, in which, one or a couple of nestlings hatched and died in the box with mom still sitting on eggs. I don't remember exactly because I don't have my nest check sheets with me from last year. They were not on cam so I just found them with the weekly nest check. I removed the dead nestlings and she continued to incubate. Later, it appeared more hatched and fledged, but there was still an adult female sitting on the remainder of the eggs. I don't remember but I don't think any more eggs hatched and I cleaned the box.
If you look back at the comments from 6/13 where I list the history of the nest to that point, you can see the egg laying was a little strange. It's kind of spread out at first and then a bunch laid. Also, we've had the two different females in the box. These may be the same two that had the weird box last year and the hatching/fledging may be strange again.
I guess we can only watch and see what happens.

Maybe she didn't cover the eggs or sit on them the same because of the high heat and humidity. I counted eggs again a few days ago. There were still 20 but one of them was dark. I don't know if it's bad or further along in development.

I wasn't sure if you saw my reply to your mention of needing directions to build a box. Here they are, from this website. Also directions for the stovepipe baffle. I've had snakes get over the conical baffle, which is also on this site. Those rat snakes are good at getting eggs! So far the stove pipe baffle has always kept them out.

I know some of you do not understand why wood ducks practice dump nesting or nest parasitism. Well, no one is sure of their strategy or the reason they do it, but it is successful. With the help of a large down blanket that the hen makes by pulling down out of her own breast, she is an inncubating machine. The down she pulls from her breast permits her to transfer more heat from body to the eggs which is 99+- one degree and keeps the eggs warm when she leaves the nest box twice a day to feed.
I took a look at my data for this year to date and I have had 30 successful nest where hens were incubating from 20 to 38 eggs. Eighteen nest had from 20 to 24 eggs, six nest from 25 to 29 and six nest 30 to 38 eggs. The first group, the hens incubated 380 eggs hatching 295 for a 77% hatching success. The second group incubated 160 eggs hatching 130 for a 81% hatching success and the last group 30 or more eggs, 202 eggs were incubated and 124 hatched for a 61% success rate. The hen that incubated 38 eggs hatched 30 of them. I still have 12 hens on large clutches of eggs still incubating as I type this post.
I have had over 300 nest initations this nesting season which I hope is coming to an end in the next three and a half to four weeks.

Great site...I've often daydreamed of having a cam in my wood duck nest which is in a natural cavity of an oak tree. I will continue to check in on your ducks progress. It's so exciting, isn't it!!!
I see you're in Greenville, TX where the flooding just occurred. I hope you weren't affected.
Melanie/Tallahassee, FL (the ducks here lay in March/hatch in April)

How in the world can she incubate so many eggs? (I know our first duck mom hatched 15) Does she rotate them? Bring some from the bottom to the top?...and forgive me if this question was answered before...but why do ducks dump eggs into other nests? Do they not want to be moms...they don't have a nest...her box is too full...she was paid to be a surrogate..(ha ha) I know some other birds do this...but will often kick the host birds eggs out of the box, if they can....and then lay their own....

Hopefully yesterday's egg dump will be the last. I woryy if we get late dumps after incubation starts. The eggs may not be fully developed by hatch day. One time I had a gimpy orphan, and I suspect it was due to egg dumping after incubation started. He was unable to climb out.

Here's the history so far.
1st egg on 5/16.
2 on 5/17.
4 on 5/22 9total of 7 days)
9 on 6/3.
17 on 6/9.
19 on 6/12.
When she leaves later I'll see if an egg was laid today.
On 6/9 the nest was incomplete, with little or no down covering the eggs. On 6/17 there was a lot of down so she might have been incubating. She was out of the nest at the time I checked but it was the "normal" evening feeding time.
Yesterday she was on the eggs during late morning when I checked so she was probably incubating, and likewise at 2:00 this afternoon.

P.S. The pop up window was showing an Eastern Phoebe nest that had 3 eggs on the June 12th when I set up the camera. It will soon have it's own page.
