Birdhouses are more formally called nest boxes, and we use the two names interchangeably. Although many nest boxes are used for art or decoration, those placed outside for nesting birds should be functional and provide a safe place for birds to nest.
If you plan on using your box to attract birds, make sure it has the same features as those described in features of a good nest box. There are many types of nest boxes:
