Big Bluebird Claymation
Ready, Set, Action:
Caldwell County Elementary Students Combine Art, Science, and Technology for Birds
- Written and produced by Tammie Sanders
Background About the Project
The Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) at Caldwell
County Elementary School (CCES) located in Western Kentucky is a group of
twenty-five dedicated students grades 3 through 5 interested in the application
of technology for the purpose of community service and creating a better world.
Each year STLP groups from across Kentucky compete on the regional level with
student produced projects. Awards and recognition for achievement are presented
at the Kentucky Teaching Learning Conference (KTLC) in Louisville each March.
As part of the Kentucky Bluebird Society (KBS) Outdoor
Classroom Enrichment Program (OCEP), students at CCES have been faithfully
monitoring nest boxes. This year, the students were fortunate
enough to have cameras inside some of the boxes and witness Eastern Bluebirds
and Carolina Chickadees build nests, lay eggs, and raise their young. From these
observations students, with the guidance and direction of Tammie Sanders,
created their "Big Bluebird Movie" Claymation. The two-minute video features
the life cycle of the Eastern Bluebird. The clay figures were made posed and
photographed by Student Technology Leadership Program students for a series of
about 500 still images combined to create an animated short. Mrs. Dyer's third
grade class wrote the song lyrics. A group of students from Mrs. Amy Holt's
class wrote the music and performed the song. The project was directed by Tammie
Sanders, Media Specialist at Caldwell County Elementary.
The claymation was created for and presented at the
KBS annual conference at Kenlake State Park in Kentucky.
Lyrics to "Fly Bluebird
Fly"
Here comes a bluebird
singing a bluebird song
Looking for a girl bird to share
his home
The home and guy just
right
A very lovely
sight
The girl likes what she sees She
very soon agrees
Bluebird and his
girl
New family for the
world
build
a nest in their new home
A bed for babies, best bed
known
Eggs smooth and
blue
Hatch
very soon
egg shakes and cracks hatches
just like that
I'm breaking free (repeat
10x)Soon baby blues beg for food
Insects, flies are
what they choose
babies grow fast, in two short
weeks
full grown feathers and full grown
beaks
I'm growin' up (repeat 10x)Time to
say goodbye
Fly into the
sky
The cycle flows
on
Life goes by
Fly
Bluebird Fly
