Thousands
of nesting Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls,
a songbird banding station, Barn Swallow colonies,
eiders, terns, guillemots... the opportunities for
learning about birds at Cornell's Shoals Marine
Lab on Appledore Island, Maine are endless. This
4 credit, two-week course takes place in late May
and early June. We spend nearly every minute of
the course in the field, moving between the islands
to learn how to monitor bird populations, band birds,
study nesting and foraging behaviors, and to understand
bird biology.
Learn
more about this amazing field station at the Shoals
Marine Lab web site. Details about the course
can be found on the Field
Ornithology course page or by downloading
the course schedule
and syllabus. An article on the course was published
in BirdScope,
Autumn 2007.
