Monty Moose is one of many stuffed animals that travel the world and report about their adventures to Mrs. Boekhout's class at the Nestor Elementary School in British Columbia, Canada. In fact Monty was the first "stuffie" to go on a stuffie exchange with another classroom across the world.

One of Monty's trips took him to visit Jean Armour Polly, author of Net-mom's Internet Kids & Family Yellow Pages. Jean, who lives in Syracuse, New York—less than an hour from the Lab, found out that Mrs. Boekhout's class participates in Project FeederWatch through Bird Studies Canada. She offered to drive Monty to the Lab of Ornithology for a visit. Monty and his class were thrilled. The class routinely visits the project's web site to submit data and to watch birds at the Lab's feeders through FeederCam. Monty volunteered to help fill the Lab's feeders while Mrs. Boekhout's class watched from Canada through the FeederCam.

Monty Visits

Monty came to the Lab on Thursday, February 19, 2004. Karen Purcell (pictured at right with Monty), assistant for the Lab's Urban Bird Studies project, greeted Monty and showed him the Lab's feeders. Soon they were in the Lab's Treman Bird Feeder Garden filling feeders and enjoying the view.

Monty rests on the platform, enjoying the view of the Lab pond, and sending a greeting to his class back in Canada.
While Monty and Karen enjoyed the feeder garden, Monty's tour guide, Jean, called Nora Boekhout (pictured on phone below) and her class at Nestor Elementary School in Coquitlam, British Columbia.
The class was assembled in the school's library where FeederCam was being projected on a large screen (as shown at right).
Nora and the class talked to David Bonter, Project FeederWatch leader (shown here with Jean Armour Polly and with Monty on the FeederCam displayed in the foreground). Nora later reported, "You can't imagine how excited the class and I were to see our dear Monty Moose on the webcam!"

More about Monty

Monty has been traveling to sites around the world and reporting back to the Nestor Elementary School about all that he sees. You can learn about his travels and read his travel logs on his web site.

More about Mrs. Boekhout's class in British Columbia

Mrs. Boekhout's class has been studying birds with the help of the Lab's web site. Not only does the class participate in Project FeederWatch, but they have a student "ornithologist of the week" who uses information from the Lab's Bird of the Week web site to teach the class about local birds. The class also assembled a "bird wall," shown at right. You can learn more about this class and their birding activities through their web site.
