Sharp-shinned Hawk

William Hartman of Stockton, New Jersey, sent in this photo of a Sharp-shinned Hawk that dropped into his yard on January 19, 2002. He reported, "We were watching our feeders and suddenly the finches departed hastily. We thought the neighborhood cat had come to salivate over the numerous creatures. We were certainly surprised when a hawk  landed on one of the feeder tower perches."

Like many FeederWatchers, Holly Lumm also had a Sharp-shinned hawk in her yard in Lake Orion, Michigan.

Cooper's Hawk

Here's a beautiful picture of a Cooper's Hawk sent to us by Marie Dexter of El Cajon, California. Many people have difficulty telling the difference between Cooper's Hawks and Sharp-shinned Hawks. To learn how to tell them apart, visit our Tricky ID pages.

Red-shouldered Hawk

Donald Barnes reports that this Red-shouldered Hawk frequents his backyard in Spring, Texas.
Leora Worthington of Salinas, California, also had a Red-shouldered Hawk hunting in her yard.
