White-winged Crossbill

Stan Lilly knew this would be a good year for irruptive species at his feeders in Weidman, Michigan, when he spotted his first White-winged Crossbill in October 2002. As the winter continued he hosted Evening Grosbeaks and Common Redpolls too--all birds he did not get at all the year before. He photographed this male White-winged Crossbill on November 18, 2002.
A female White-winged Crossbill joined American Goldfinches at this feeder in Helen Heizyk's yard in Middlesex, New York.

Pine Siskin

Lisa Barker was excited to find Pine siskins at her feeder in Reston, Virginia. She had never had siskins in her yard before. Pine Siskins can be found throughout the continental US in winter, but their movements vary from one year to the next.

Pine Grosbeak

Carolyn Sutcliffe enjoyed watching Pine Grosbeaks eat the crab apples in her yard in Sanbornton, New Hampshire for nearly a month. At one point they counted as many as 30 birds in their yard and in their neighbor's black cherry tree.

Evening Grosbeaks

Frank Hughes photographed these Evening Grosbeaks at his feeder in Ridgway, Pennsylvania on February 30, 2002. These grosbeaks are often found at feeders in Pennsylvania in winter, but like Pine Siskins, their movements vary from one winter to the next. Learn more about Evening Grosbeak population trends.
