Birds of prey

Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks are notoriously difficult birds to tell apart. The photo at left is of a Cooper's Hawk and was taken in January, 2000, by Suzanne R. Moore in Sherman, Texas.
|
| The photo at right shows a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Sandra Dougherty from Canterbury, NH spotted it in her yard during a storm in February, 2000. |
|
| Notice the difference in the tails. Cooper's Hawks have more rounded tail feathers than Sharp-shinned hawks. Also, their tail feathers are graduated in length whereas the tail feathers of a Sharpie are of equal lengths. Learn more about identifying these two species here. |

Blue Jays meet Steller's Jays in Colorado
| Vernon Dayhoff, a FeederWatch Ambassador in Colorado Springs, Colorado, managed to capture this great photo of Blue Jays and Steller's Jays dining together on his makeshift feeding platform feeder. As Blue Jays continue to extend their range to the west, more FeederWatchers are apt to discover scenes such as this one. |
