Scholarships

The Francis M. Peacock Scholarship for Native Bird Habitat provides financial aid to a college senior or graduate student to study areas in the United States that provide winter or summer habitat for our threatened or endangered native birds. The award is given by the Garden Club of America and is administered by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

The Walter E. Benning Fundprovides scholarship assistance to a Cornell University graduate student studying ornithology and its relevance to conservation. The award is up to $500 for Spring 2007. Apply by March 31, 2007, by submitting a short (two page maximum) proposal describing your research, relevance to conservation, schedule of completion, and funding. Include your social security number on your proposal. Mail to Scott Sutcliffe, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 159 Sapsucker Woods Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.

Temporary Software Engineer - Media Applications - 06364

This is a 6-month temporary appointment with possibility of renewal based upon availability of funding.

DESCRIPTION: Work as part of a team to develop and maintain applications for the Macaulay Library (ML), a multimedia archive of animal behavior recordings, at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology (CLO). Intra and internet applications are needed for both media and metadata. These applications must be properly integrated with other existing digital archives (especially the NSDL) and other CLO databases. This position concentrates on the development of media tools. Develop, implement, and maintain stand-alone and web-based applications for the Macaulay Library using Java, XML, HTML, Javascipt, Enterprise Java and any other necessary technologies. Deploy, monitor, and maintain web applications on the servers. Assist in maintaining all ML servers and data storage systems, including backup, directory, web, application, collaborative, transcoding and media/content delivery servers running on Apple and/or UNIX servers.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent. Familiarity with a broad range of J2EE technologies, especially Struts, Hibernate, JDBC, JSP and Ant. Experience using relational databases and an understanding of relational database design such as SQL. Two years of experience with Max OSX and/or UNIX. Two years experience in object-oriented programming and scripting languages with a commanding understanding of application design. Demonstrable skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and written and oral communication. Must demonstrate experience writing application requirements, architecting applications, and documenting code. Experience administering subversion source code repositories. Ability to work well with a diverse group in a professional and respectful work environment. Ability to promote cooperation and a welcoming environment for all. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team. Must be able to help establish realistic goals and deliver work on schedule. Ability to handle multiple tasks, and can be flexible, open and receptive to new ideas and approaches. Must strive to meet service expectations of one's external and/or internal customers. Preferred: An interest in nature, biology, science, and/or conservation. Experience managing Mac and/or UNIX servers, RAID sets, and tape libraries. Knowledge of Apache and Tomcat administration. Experience building dynamic web interfaces using JavaScript and Ajax.

Manager Finance II - 06369

DESCRIPTION: In collaboration with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' Associate Dean for Finance and Administrative Services direct, organize, and supervise all financial operations for the CLO, which is a membership institution interpreting and conserving the earth's biological diversity. This satellite center within CALS provides essential financial management support to ten programs within CLO including the Bioacoustics Research Program, Bird Population Studies, Information Science, Citizen Science, Conservation Science, Education, Evolutionary Biology, Macaulay Library, Program Development and Evaluation, Communications and Marketing, and Development. Administer the CLO operational and capital budget. Prepare the CLO budget, currently at $14.5 million, plus quarterly reviews and analyses. Provide comprehensive financial management and administrative oversight in university budget process, sponsored project proposals and administration, internal and external financial reporting, budget analysis, forecasting, fund allocation, disbursements, and financial transactions. Interpret policies and establish review procedures to assure appropriate stewardship of university, donor, and sponsored funds. Provide consultation on financial matters to Directors, Senior Management Team, and Principal Investigators. Collaborate with the CLO financial and administrative staff to develop a functional understanding of all programmatic business needs. Develop complex reports to monitor and support proactive decisions, ensure appropriate funds management and compliance, and oversee analyses and ad-hoc reporting to support department management in achieving operational objectives. Lead and participate in the development and/or implementation of financial processes and systems in CLO to improve overall collaboration, organization, and accurate financial information. Provide direction to CLO Business Service Center Team Leader in the establishment of effective and efficient operational support for transactions, customer service and compliance with college and university policies. Prepare and deliver semiannual financial reports to CLO's Administrative Board.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree in financial/business management, or equivalent. 5-7 years of financial or accounting experience in a complex academic or research setting. Demonstrated expertise in budgeting and financial reporting/principles; excellent analytical, data interpretation, and forecasting skills required. Proficiency with computer applications for financial management and reporting (e.g., MS Excel, MS Word, MS Access, and/or FileMaker). Excellent oral/written communication, organizational, and time management skills are essential. Ability to establish and sustain effective relationships with all constituents. Ability to work with and represent work units professionally and ethically with tact, diplomacy, and advocacy. Must have the abilities to interpret policy and to manage competing priorities and resource allocation effectively. Use sound judgment in decision making and in accomplishing tasks that are urgent or of a sensitive or confidential nature, while meeting competing deadlines. Ability to foster a team environment while meeting individual and unit goals in accordance with the broader mission. Requires conceptual and imaginative thinking in a highly complex atmosphere with a strong record of prior supervisory and leadership experience. Ability to work and build sustaining partnerships with college, university and departmental financial offices and staff. Preferred: MBA, 7 or more years concentrated experience in a financial office setting involving complex financial structures and multiple revenue sources. Experience with Cornell policies and procedures in the areas of accounting, budgeting, purchasing, and disbursements. Knowledge and expertise in the use of Cornell on-line systems: CornellC, APPS, JEMS, BRIO, Web Financials.

Acoustic Analyst - 06363 (2 positions available)

DESCRIPTION: The Bioacoustics Research Program (BRP) integrates the fields of behavioral biology, software engineering, and electrical engineering to answer questions regarding animal acoustic communication and to use sound as a means of monitoring populations of threatened and endangered species. BRP is seeking a research aide to participate in acoustic and statistical analysis of sound recordings of marine and terrestrial animals. The research aide will primarily utilize specialized custom computer software programs, especially XBAT, MatLab, and Raven, to analyze animal vocalizations and to configure detection software tools for optimal results. This staff member will also pursue a broad spectrum of other research tasks, such as organizing data, synthesis of research results, statistical analysis, and scientific writing.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree or other formal training program of four years or equivalent. More than two, but less than four year's job-related experience or equivalent. Experience assisting in scientific research. Minimum of two years on-the-job experience with computers (Windows operating system). Good working knowledge of basic commercial spreadsheet and word processing software (Excel, Word). Organizational skills and excellent attention to detail. Ability to work independently and also as part of a team, to work quickly, effectively under pressure, and use judgment in accomplishing tasks that are urgent. Ability to prioritize and deliver work on schedule. Comfortable working in an environment where change in process/procedures is the norm. Proven writing skills. Excellent listening skills. Preferred: A degree in the Biological Sciences. Experience with signal processing or sound analyses, databases, and statistical analyses. Experience working with and recognizing bird, marine mammal, and other animal sounds. Experience with computer management and hardware installation.

Senior Director, Development & Philanthropy - 05241

DESCRIPTION: The Cornell Lab of Ornithology (an administrative unit of Cornell University) seeks an experienced development officer to fill the newly created position of Senior Director, Development and Philanthropy. As one of four senior management positions at the Lab, this person will, (1) lead a team of specialists in donor development, annual fundraising, special gifts, foundation and corporate relations, capital campaign management, and planned giving; (2) work with the Lab's Executive Director and Cornell's Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development to set capital campaign and annual fundraising goals for the Lab; (3) grow the level of support from both traditional and non-traditional donor pools, from hobby enthusiasts and concerned environmentalists to major donors and international philanthropists; (4) creatively manage involvement by the Executive Director and senior programmatic leaders in meeting with prospective donors to generate major support for the Lab's programs; (5) work with the Senior Director of Communications and Marketing to increase the Lab's membership base (currently at 33,000 members) and the financial support it provides; (6) advise the Executive Director and Administrative Board on strategic and operational matters.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 5-7 years experience in management and leadership within the not-for-profit sector. Must have exemplary writing and communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of development and fund raising. Must have experience in modern management practices and data-based information systems. Must work effectively in a team environment. An advanced degree in science or business management is desirable, but not mandatory. Experience with alumni, corporation, foundation, and staff interactions typical at a major research university also desired.
