WHY STUDY URBAN BIRDS?
Scientists are trying to learn
about
- which birds can survive in cities
- where birds live in cities
- whether birds behave differently than they do in other places.
Some birds are good at surviving in cities. They may eat garbage
or spilled food. They may nest on windowsills or balconies. Some even live in
large flocks in city parks and along tree-lined streets similar to their natural
habitats.
Certain bird species now use the same cities they avoided only 20 years ago.
Some birds may stop in the city only for a few days during migration. Others
stay a whole season or even year-round.
As birds increasingly use urban areas, conservation efforts have to expand
into cities. Protecting and improving parks and planting native trees can help
make cities better places for birds. To do this well, scientists need to know
about urban habitats and the birds that use them.
