Ten
Ways You Can Get Started Studying Birds
1.
Set up a feeder area. Make your own feeders and learn to identify the birds they attract.
2.
Put up a nestbox in
your schoolyard or nearby backyard/natural area.
3. Go for a bird walk. See what birds you
find, talk about the habitat.
4. Print coloring book pages and have kids
color the birds using the bird poster (order info) or a field guide (bibliography link).
5.
Study Pigeons. Count
the numbers and color types in a local flock of pigeons.
6. Make Bird ID flashcards. Each
student could be responsible for one species and become the expert on that bird.
7. Read a book such as Flute.... Make
the connection to local and/or international issues.
8.
Read the Classroom Birdscope Webzine -- online student journal.
9. Brainstorm research questions generated by
exploring the CLO databases on birds (list/link).
