Are you ready for a unique and exciting educational experience this summer?  Then join the Lab of Ornithology's Kevin McGowan in the upper Amazon basin in northern Peru for the 12th annual Amazon Rainforest Workshop.
Attracting K-12 teachers and other educators from throughout the U.S., this workshop will immerse you in the wonders of the tropical rainforest, and you will return to the classroom with a rich set of experiences and knowledge to share.  The program offers an opportunity to work side-by-side with scientists in one of the most biologically diverse environments in the world.  Amazon-River,-Peru-12Jul01-.jpg (9029 bytes)

Other faculty include specialists in botany, marine biology, entomology, and tropical biodiversity.  You'll visit local schools and families and see how indigenous cultures use the forest for medicine, food, and shelter.

As our resident ornithologist, Kevin brings a lifetime of experience with birds around the world, including three previous stints as instructor for this Amazon workshop.  Back home, Kevin divides his time between long-term research on the behaviour and populations of crows (most recently focusing on the spread of West Nile virus) and development of ornithological resources for the Lab's Education department.  He shares his place on the faculty of this annual rainforest program with Ken Rosenberg, ornithologist and the Lab's Director of Conservation, participating every other year.
A favorite spot for studying birds in this workshop is 115 feet in the air on a 1/4-mile Rainforest Canopy Walkway. Here you'll come face-to-face with Paradise Tanagers, Black-headed Parrots, Green Honeycreepers and White-necked Puffbirds, among the 500+ species found in the vicinity of Iquitos, Peru.  One of the many themes we'll explore is how migration establishes an intricate connection between the birds and habitats in our own backyards and the diverse tropical forests where many species spend the winter.
