Montezuma Trip

Enjoy a weekend in nearby Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, featuring field trips led by local birding experts!

On April 18 and 19, we'll be taking an overnight trip to the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in Seneca Falls, NY to view migrating flocks of waterfowl, shorebirds, and other local birds. Trip Itinerary

Saturday, April 18
Sunday, April 19
7:00 AM Meet at CLO Parking Lot 6:00 AM Early morning birding on the north shore of Seneca Lake
7:15 AM Depart for Montezuma NWR (Bring a non-perishable bag lunch/drink - TWO if you are staying overnight) 7:00 AM Breakfast
12:00 PM Arrive at Montezuma NWR and have a picnic lunch, followed by birdwatching at Montezuma NWR South (Wildlife Drive, Visitor's Ctr., May's Point) 8:00 AM Depart the motel (motel TBA) for Montezuma NWR
6:00 PM

Dinner at a local restaurant (restaurant TBA, casual dress, bring money for your meal)

8:30 AM Birdwatching at Northern Montezuma Wetlands State Wildlife Management Area (Mucklands, Towpath Road, Audubon Center)
8:00 PM Arrive at the motel (motel TBA) for an overnight stay. 12:00 PM Picnic Lunch at the Montezuma NWR Audubon Center, followed by afternoon birdwatching (optional) at Montezuma NWR (Carncross Road and Howland Island)
8:30 PM OPTIONAL night hike along the north shore of Seneca Lake
3:30 PM Depart for Ithaca (arrive back at CLO Parking Lot approx. 5:00pm)


Trip sign-ups are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, however, please note that sign-up requests from students who are enrolling in Spring Field Ornithology (Field Trips AND Lectures sections) will be honored before sign-up requests from the general public can be accepted.

Please Bring:
A non-perishable bag lunch and a drink for Saturday (and also a non-perishable bag lunch and drink for Sunday if you plan to stay past lunch time), money for dinner on Saturday, binoculars (and/or spotting scope - if you have one), field guide, sunscreen, water bottle, and bug repellent.

Attire:
Casual. Light-colored clothing (long pants) and socks, and sun hats. We recommend watching the weather channel—you may need to bring rain gear and/or a windbreaker!!

What is included in the trip price:
Top-notch field trip leaders, one (double occupancy) motel room, and any complimentary meals (as specified) above. Each motel room has two double beds, so you may want to decide who you would like to room with in advance. If a private motel room is desired, there will be an additional fee. Please contact the SFO Course Coordinator for more information.
