How do female Song Sparrows choose a mate? Is it the male’s feathers, song, or even his smell? Could it be all of the above? Find out about this exciting research led by Dr. Leanne Grieves, a Rose Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
Join the Beginner Bird Walk at the entrance to the Visitor Center and Cayuga Bird Club walk leaders will guide you to the research site at the Lab’s Luisa Duemling Meadows. Once there, you’ll hear from Dr. Grieves, see a banding demonstration, participate in acoustic monitoring, and more as she untangles the intricacies of mate choice and reproductive success. After the program, continue the bird walk looking and listening for the birds of spring.
Please dress for the weather, wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet and muddy (some parts of the trail are soggy!), and be prepared to be outside for 1.5-2 hours. You’ll travel around two miles. Binoculars are available to loan. The Cornell Lab’s Visitor Center is closed for a renovation, but a porta potty is available. Registration is recommended for this free program.
