Eric Snyder
Postdoctoral Fellow
I am a Christopher W. Clark postdoctoral fellow at the Yang Center, where I study acoustic detection and tracking of whales using Distributed Acoustic Sensors (fiber-optic cables repurposed as acoustic sensors). The goal of my work is to develop a process to monitor whale populations in real time, allowing for more immediate responses to conservation and protection decisions.
Expertise
My expertise is in ocean acoustics research, including propagation modeling, detection, localization, tracking, and more. During my PhD, I developed Where’s Whaledo — a localization toolkit used primarily for tracking elusive beaked whale species. While I have worked on a wide variety of acoustic technologies, my passion lies in applying these methods to the urgent conservation challenges facing the modern world.
Beyond the Lab
Outside of work, I enjoy being in nature, making and listening to music, and spending time with my family. I am keenly interested in the intersection of art and science, and in finding creative ways to expand the audience and impact of our work.
