The Loggerhead Shrike can be identified by its gray coloring, large head, black facial markings, and black wings and tail feathers. This bird can also be identified by its large bill that narrows and hooks at the tip. This small bird has white underparts that can sometimes be barred with gray. The males and females usually share very similar marks, but the males are significantly larger than the females and females can have more brown at times. The juveniles are also fairly similar to the adults but are usually more round with a thicker eye stripe and more gray plumage. The song of the Loggerhead Shrike is described as a raspy shriek that rises in pitch. Each note of its call can be between one and two seconds long.

Listen to its songs and calls here.

Habitat

The Loggerhead Shrike is mostly found in wide-open grasslands with a scattering of perches to hunt from. Apparent from its beak shape, the Loggerhead Shrike is a hunter of small invertebrates and vertebrates such as insects and small rodents. This bird also shows a preference for thorny vegetation, which helps this bird impale their prey if needed. Sometimes, this preference can even lead to prey being found on human structures such as barbed wire or fences.

The Loggerhead Shrike is a migratory bird, with breeding ranges that can reach as far north as Canada in some places. In the Southeast U.S., there are areas where the species resides all year and will defend its territory from competing birds. In these areas, the Loggerhead Shrike will usually stay within the same territory and with the same mate for the entire year. This is one of the only shrikes that is only found in North America and cannot be found farther south than Mexico.

Conservation to Conservation

Some of the threats to the conservation of the Loggerhead Shrike include the use of pesticides on agricultural fields and grasslands, habitat degradation, and disturbance at the nest. Today, roadside treatments of herbicides, as well as constant mowing, are causing the biggest mortality rate in Loggerhead Shrikes because this reduces their perches for hunting as well as their cover from predators. Additionally, the biggest pesticide issue in the past was from organochlorines that were used mostly for mosquito control.

Degradation of pastures is one of the largest threats to the Loggerhead Shrike and its habitats. These birds show high habitat selectivity, sometimes staying in one area for the entire year, so loss of habitat is devastating. These fields are being converted into agricultural fields that are not suitable habitat for Loggerhead Shrikes, whether for nesting or finding their preferred prey.

<div
