Downy Woodpecker variation

Downy Woodpecker Here's an interesting Downy Woodpecker photo sent in by Sally Herndon of Jefferson, Ohio. The red spot on the back of his head is nearly split in two. Sally says, "He looked like he had eyes in the back of his head." Individual plumage variations such as these are common.

Northern Flicker

Mona Cavallero sent in this shot of a Northern Flicker feeding at a dish feeder in Elmwood, Connecticut. Notice the yellow shafts on the inside of its tail (hence the old common name:  yellow-shafted flicker).
