BEAT: A bioacoustics learning community for Indonesia and Malaysia

The Program

The Bioacoustics Equipment and Training (BEAT) program supports teams in Malaysia and Indonesia to use bioacoustics for impactful conservation projects. Together, we’re building a community of bioacousticians engaged in some crucial eavesdropping.

With hyperdiverse rainforests and coral reefs, Indonesia and Malaysia are ideal for applying acoustic monitoring to study endangered species and assess the impacts of human activity.

Our Teams

What can the sounds of baby hornbills teach us about nesting success? Can post-mined landscapes recover to their pre-disturbed states? How are gibbons changing their tune in fragmented habitats?

So far, 18 BEAT teams have pursued diverse questions across a range of taxa. Click below to tour their study sites and learn their stories.

SIMBA

The Symposium for Indonesia–Malaysia BioAcousics (SIMBA) brings together attendees from conservation organizations, universities, and government agencies across the region, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines. Members from each BEAT team share their research, grow networks, and chart the future of bioacoustics in the region.
