Joel Popp (2025)
Joel is an illustrator from Minnesota whose love of birds has led to adventures across the United States. From North Dakota to Nebraska and eventually Texas, Joel’s fieldwork as an undergraduate focused on a variety of species including Eastern and Western Meadowlark, Grasshopper Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird and House Sparrow. He graduated from North Dakota State University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
Joel taught himself the fundamentals of science illustration before going on to earn a certificate from the Gretchen Halpert Scientific Illustration Distance Program in 2023. Now, Joel is excited to be part of the Bartels Science Illustration Program at the Cornell Lab. Outside of illustration and birding, his favorite pastimes include hiking, cooking, board games, and video games.
