Technology

Our engineering team develops cutting-edge, yet cost-effective, hardware and software solutions. These solutions support terrestrial and marine passive-acoustic monitoring (PAM) efforts and acoustic studies of behavioral ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. We aim to make these technologies available to researchers worldwide to support a wide range of conservation efforts. Here is a selected list of tools we developed in-house:

  • Swift

The Swift is our newly developed terrestrial autonomous recording unit. The goal of this development effort was to build a small, lightweight, and very cost-effective acoustic recorder. Our hope is that this unit will enable not only researchers, but also hobbyists, from all over the world to collect acoustics data in support of wildlife conservation efforts. Swifts have already been deployed... See More

  • Rockhopper

We are currently finalizing the development of a new marine autonomous recording unit. This unit, called Rockhopper, will replace the Marine Autonomous Recording Unit (MARU or pop-up) which has been BRP's workhorse for almost two decades. We will post updates on the features and capabilities of the new Rockhopper recorder here in the near future. Stay tuned!... See More

  • Robin

The Robin is our real-time detection and reporting unit and we use it to monitor marine environments (e.g., listenforwhales.org) as well as terrestrial environments (e.g., for detection of gunshots to aid anti-poaching efforts). The unit is based on a Raspberry Pi and features WiFi, cell, and Iridium satellite connectivity. Deployed in the field, a Robin unit continuously... See More

  • Raven-X

The goal of of the Matlab-based Raven-X tool set is to integrate high-performance computing (HPC) technologies and bioacoustics data-mining capabilities. Raven-X provides a hardware-independent solution, or framework, for processing large acoustic data sets ('aka' BIG data) to the bioacoustics community. The tool set enables commonly available multi-core computers to process large multi-channel sound archives at accelerated... See More

  • Raven Pro, Lite, and Exhibit

Raven is a software program for the acquisition, visualization, measurement, and analysis of sounds. We offer three different packages: Raven Pro is a powerful, user-friendly research and teaching tool for scientists working with acoustic signals. Raven Pro's highly configurable views provide unparalleled flexibility in data display. Student discounts and per country discounts are available. Raven Pro is one... See More

  • Metadata Management

Keeping track of hundreds of projects and deployments isn't an easy task and data that aren't properly archived and accessible aren't useful. To accomplish this we manage our metadata with a FileMaker relational database called “BRP Projects and Archives” developed in-house. We are using this database to track each and every deployment we have ever conducted. Specific... See More
