Science Communication Fund: Journalism Experiences for Cornell Undergraduates

Established by Jay Branegan ‘72 and Stefania Pittaluga in 2016, the Science Communication Fund supports Cornell undergraduates as they immerse in science journalism at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to inspire and engage people around the world in learning about and protecting birds and the environment.

As a Science Communication fund recipient, you’ll work alongside the Cornell Lab’s editors, designers, scientists, and educators to craft stories that advance the understanding of science and conservation. You will gain experience in all aspects of production including conceptualizing and pitching stories; interviewing scientists; writing, filming, editing, or designing content; revising work; and publishing or broadcasting in print. Hone your skills to write news, features, or press materials; create audio, photo, video, or live-streaming productions; or generate interactive, data-driven graphics.

The Cornell Lab reaches more than 20 million people each year through our websites, print publications, documentaries, live-streaming broadcasts, and social media. Student work may be published in Living Bird magazine, All About Birds, the Cornell Chronicle, and social media channels for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Cornell University.

We accept applications for summer positions starting each fall. Please return to this site after September 1, 2019, for information on how to apply for 2020.
