Emily Bunnell

(she/her)

Creative Director

I have the unique privilege of combining a lifelong love of nature, art, and design in this position within the Lab’s Integrated Marketing and Communications team. As Creative Director, I lead design, brand management and visual outputs, collaborating with the design team and partnering with leadership teams to create consistent, impactful storytelling across the Lab that meaningfully advance the Lab’s goals in bird science, research, education and conservation.

My Story

For years in western Massachusetts, when the snow gets particularly deep, a porcupine takes residency on the very top branch of a large pine by my home and feasts on the needles, leaving it awkwardly bare. He quietly observes me from 30 feet up, as I observe him. I named him Regis Quillbin. Every summer, in June & July, a painted turtle, emerges from the pond to lay two clutches of eggs in the sunny yard. She has a devastating & unique crack across her shell that does not slow her down that improves ever-so-slightly each year. She is the boldest turtle in the pond. I named her Tilly, Mother of the Turtles. I have come to find that simply slowing down to watch nature is a powerful step in developing a relationship to and respect for the natural world. It opens new perspectives and questions. It can inspire care and action. The stories of the natural world can transform and engage people like nothing else. I love that the Lab inspires people around the world to notice and participate in the story of birds and conservation.
