Description: In this workshop, you will learn about our Students as Scientists curriculum, the science process, & how to help your student’s questions get off the ground. Asking testable questions will help your students launch interesting, relevant, & achievable investigations.

Takeaways: Participants will learn how to help their students think like a scientist and move from a curious question into a testable question that will launch a student-led investigation.


Building Elementary Science Literacy through Storybooks and Engaging Activities

Date: Friday, November 8, 2024

Strand: STEM Haven

Description: In this workshop, you’ll discover nature-themed elementary storybooks and their free book guides. We’ll learn while having fun with activities that meet NGSS, Math, ELA, and Art standards. These engaging activities will increase science vocabulary and literacy.  

Takeaways: Participants will be able to use engaging storybooks and activities centered on nature and birds to boost their diverse students’ science vocabulary, increase their connection to nature and science, and teach integrated STEAM content.


Build Local Connections & Global Perspective with Participatory Science (Bring your own device!)

Date: Saturday, November 9, 2024

Time: 1:00 – 2:00 pm CST

Location: New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center – 287

Strand: STEM Haven

Description: In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to help your students connect to nature through free resources (apps, lesson plans, & multimedia resources) that will help them identify birds & participate in eBird while teaching standards-aligned science & math content.

Takeaways: Participants will be able to: use the Merlin Bird ID app to identify birds,  submit data to eBird, and describe how participatory science helps students develop data literacy, deepen their understanding of biodiversity, uncover real-world patterns and trends, and support conservation efforts.
