Copyright
Getting copyright right can be a challenge in any institution. This web page is intended to be a guide for Lab of Ornithology staff of all types. It is our responsibility to maintain the integrity of the Lab and ensure that we are setting a good example for all.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is expected to adhere to Cornell University copyright policy at all times, just as all University staff are. However, we don't always fit the mold. We have classes without a definite end and partners globally who are not affiliated with Cornell.
This page is intended to be a guide to help you decide if what you want is compliant with our policy and to help you navigate to get what you need to do your work. Whether it's a class you want to teach, a public outreach seminar you were assigned at the last minute or simply sharing a document with a collegue on the other side of the globe your librarian is here to serve you. Don't hesitate to ask for assistance via email or by phone (607)254-2165.
Much of what I will refer to is available at the Cornell Copyright Information Center. Here I use a more naretive format.
You want to make a copy for a class you are teaching but aren't sure if it's considered "Fair Use" use the check list for fair use. Keep a copy of the final checked off form for your records. In the event that you are accused of a copyright infringement this completed form is your argument that you believed that you were doing the right thing.
To share a document with a colleague please send a link to the site (Biosis or Web of Science) where the document can be found or simply send a citation and a summary in your own words. The posting of electronic copies of literary works on an intranet (such as confluence) or sending them via email is not a good idea. It may be construed as a "disregard of copyright restrictions or contractual obligations".
As of June 15, 2009 this is a work in progress.
Please bear with me while I create a new resource.
Thank you,
Jacie
