October 25 at 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
As part of Birdability Week, we invite people with disabilities—as well as their families, friends, and caregivers—to join us for a celebration of accessible birding at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. This free event is open to all and will highlight the joy of birds, community, and inclusion in the outdoors.
An ASL interpreter will be on-site during the event.
Activities include:
Stationary Birding 10:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m.
Join staff to look and listen for birds, and test out adaptive birding gear designed to make birding easier and more comfortable. From the Visitor Center, cross Timmy’s Walk to the pavilion area near the crane sculpture. The pavilion area offers a partially-shaded spot to observe birds around the pond, woods, and feeder garden area. Binoculars, spotting scopes, and adaptive gear are available for use and staff will gladly provide tutorials at any time. Folding chairs are available for all attendees but please feel free to bring your own seat. Come and go as you please. In the event of inclement weather, birding will take place indoors at the Visitor Center.
Accessible Birding Resources 10:00 a.m.—1:00 p.m.
Learn more about how to make birding inclusive and welcoming for all, and get information on accessible birding locations in the area.
Merlin and Sound Recording* 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Stop by the Merlin table in the Visitors Center to learn about the history of sound recording and how Merlin is made, and try out a parabolic microphone!
*This station has been adjusted from the originally scheduled behind-the-scenes tour due to construction.
Presentation: Merlin Bird ID 12:15 p.m.
Learn how the Merlin Bird ID app works, how to use it to identify birds you find, and how you can help make it even better. 25 minutes, plus time for questions after.
Our parking lot has six van accessible spaces with no-curb access to paved areas. A wheelchair-accessible porta-potty is available in the parking lot and a wheelchair accessible, all-gender/family restroom and water fountain are available in the Visitor Center after 10:00 a.m. We also have two wheelchairs available for your use on site.
