Encouraging Inclusivity Through Participatory Science

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s K-12 Education team strives to be inclusive in our actions and words. It has become apparent that we can do better and that change is required. We, along with some other organizations we respect, are transitioning away from the term citizen science to participatory science because we recognize that all participants provide crucial crowd-sourced scientific data.

We’ve always known that anyone can contribute their data and create change, including young people. We welcome and encourage data contributed by all people, no matter their citizenship status, gender, ethnicity, race, skin color, religion, physical and mental ability, sexual orientation, nationality, age, and other identities. We know that the amazing data we have access to would not exist without participation from people around the globe.

With our transition to participatory science, we are acknowledging with our words that the love of birds is boundaryless. We welcome all participants. We are beginning the work to edit our resources to reflect this change. Stay tuned as we migrate to this new terminology!
